Neural Manipulation: a therapy for muscle pain

Registered massage therapist performing neural manipulation therapy to relief muscle pain in halifax

Neural Manipulation and craniosacral therapy are both treatments that involves targeting of the nervous system. By releasing any restriction or muscle pain that exist within the body or its connections and relieving other pains related to nerves damage and weakness from injuries located within the soft tissue. Nerves work properly when they can move freely and without any rigidness. If this is not the current state of your nervous system, the neural manipulation process can quickly resolve the issue. Problems such as whiplash, lower back pain, and tendinitis can all be relieved with this treatment.

Nervous System

For us to come to the full understanding of what neural manipulation is and how can help us when we feel muscle pain, we have to, first of all, understand what the nervous system of the body is, and how it functions.

What is the Nervous System of the body?

The nervous system is the body system responsible for the communication between the brain and other parts of the body. It is made up of the brain, spinal cord, sensory organs, and a series of nerves that connect all these to the different parts of the body.

The nervous system makes it possible for the body to be able to detect environmental changes and respond to them accordingly. It works as fast as the speed of light. Disfuctioning of it can cause severe muscle pain resulting in a decrease of muscle strength

Let’s take, for example. You mistakenly place your hand a hot surface. You would immediately remove your hand, which would more or less seem like a reflex action. For you to have known that surface was boiling, the receivers in your nervous system would receive the heat and send a message through the nerves to your brain. Your brain would then through nerves send a message back to your hand, letting you know that it is dangerous for your hand to be on that surface, and should be removed immediately. As slow as this may seem to be, it is speedy.

Now imagine one’s nervous system not functioning as it should, you can imagine how bad that would be. There would be no way to feel pain, respond to external changes, ending up with a lot of muscle pain and many more. This area of concern is where neural manipulation comes in place.

What is Neural manipulaton?

A neural manipulation is a form of massage therapy capable of resetting and restoring a displaced or dysfunctional nervous system of the body.

Now, what are the things that can bring about neural pain (which is more severe compared to muscle pain), displace, or render the nervous system of the body dysfunctional? They are;

  •  Poor posture
  •  Bad diets
  •  Surgeries
  •  Injury/Strain
  •  Pregnancy/Delivery
  •  Infection
  •  Trauma
  •  Chronic shock stress
  •  Pollution

The nerves in the body (which transmit information from different parts of the body to the brain, and back to those parts), need to be able to move freely for them to carry out their functions efficiently, but the above situations can stop that from happening.

Once a nerve is displaced, it would not be able to move, glide, or function as it should. With this happening in one part of the body, other nerves in different parts of the body would try to compensate for it, thereby now overworking their selves. With time, the nerve displacement would spread to other nerves as well. This can be prevented and curbed through neural manipulation.

Neural manipulation techniques identify the displaced nerves. And involve the gentle application of hands-on pressure to those areas, helping the nervous system to relax and the nerves to get back to moving freely as before.

Most times, people have to go through multiple (ranging from 3 upward) neural manipulation sessions for it to be effective. The number of sessions per person would be different, as people’s body systems react and respond differently.
